Successful entrepreneurs Justin Re and Matt ‘Lanis’ Lanigan have partnered up with Vanessa Nitsos and Jason Chan owners of the award winning Lady Bower, Reservoir. They are set on celebrating the fine local produce at hand and providing Melbournians with what we know and love best - good food and coffee.
Opening in May 2014 Lucky Penny serves up quality coffee, all- day breakfast and brunch, and a menu full of flavour and variety.
The Lucky Penny menu focuses on using seasonal fresh and locally- sourced goods, and features some 'must haves' of 2014: the Smoothie Bowl, green juices and quinoa salad. But bacon fans need not fret – the menu is not all green and granola (ours features carrot slice).
If you fancy an indulgence, Lucky Penny offers the likes of an authentic champagne breakfast, black pudding with spiced plum jam, poached egg, chicken liver and brioche, or waffles with salted chocolate and ice cream. Breakfast can be hearty, healthy or both, and is available all day.
Lunch includes meatballs in flat bread with smokey sauce, and egg and bacon rolls. You can also tuck into some tasty salads featuring whipped feta, mushrooms, cos lettuce, lentils and rosemary, or dine on seafood. Calamari Skate in brown butter with brussel sprouts, lemon and wild fennel perhaps? While you are at it, you may as well throw in a Five Senses espresso martini. Yolo!
The support for locals doesn’t stop at produce either – the aprons are designed by successful Melbourne label Bul, nominated for the 2014 Australian Designer of the year award. More ‘local’ love is given to the baking of bread, with the team working in conjunction with Ed's Bread to develop their own unique style of bread exclusive to Lucky Penny.
Whether you are brunching post-Pilates or post-party, Lucky Penny has something for everyone.
Take away coffee tarts and gluten-free bliss balls will be at the ready for drop ins.
Lucky Penny pays homage to vintage modernism, opting for a rustic Scandinavian vibe.
Using Biasol Design Studio to fit out the venue, the space is coated in fresh white brick walls, warmed up with furnishings of pale wood, tanned leather and soft lighting. The cafe bar is made using beautiful reclaimed wood and accompanied by shelf space and a fridge display.
Now to the all-important talk…coffee. You will be pleased to know Lucky Penny uses 5 Senses coffee seasonal blend and baristas are experienced with rock star training from the Australian Barista Academy.
